Set your oven to 450°F and coat a 9x9-inch baking dish with cooking spray.

Warm up a large pan over medium-high heat. Cook the sausage, stirring until there’s no pink left, about 8-10 minutes. Drain the grease on paper towels.

Combine the flour, sugar, and baking powder in a medium bowl. Slowly add buttermilk, stirring until the mix gets sticky. Throw in the sausage and cheese and mix gently.

Pour melted butter into your baking dish. Drop the batter in and smooth it out evenly. Slice the dough into 9 squares.

Pop the dish on the middle rack and bake for 25-30 minutes. Turn it once halfway, and cover with foil if it’s browning too much. It’s done when the top’s golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
